Translational Acupuncture Research: Bridge Basic Mechanisms with Clinical Practice

Presenters: Richard E. Harris, PhD; Mingxiao Yang; and Vitaly Napadow, PhD
Panelists: Claudia Citkovitz, PhD, MS, LAc and Benjamin Kligler, MD, MPH

This session will explore basic and translational research outcomes in human patients to better inform how research of acupuncture mechanisms can directly inform acupuncture clinical outcomes and how acupuncture is practiced clinically. Dr. Richard E. Harris will explore the ability of quantitative sensory testing and functional brain neuroimaging to predict clinical pain responsiveness to acupuncture within individuals with chronic pain.  Dr. Mingxiao Yang will present ongoing research on COMT polymorphism and response to electro and auricular acupuncture in cancer survivors with pain. Dr. Vitaly Napadow will highlight his recent research applying hyperscan fMRI and EEG methods to explore how brain concordance between acupuncturists and chronic pain patients supports therapeutic alliance and reduced pain severity following acupuncture therapy.  Panel discussion: Claudia Citkovitz and Dr. Benjamin Kligler will discuss how these research findings can bridge basic science and acupuncture clinical research and practice, with particular emphasis on how to best develop acupuncture as a precision, patient-centered intervention.
